Motherhood

Do you ever do things (or say things) that you never in a million years imagined doing or saying?  You know, mostly things that come about with motherhood like grabbing a sock out of a flushing toilet or strapping a naked child into their car seat because they refuse to get clothes on or maybe saying something like, "remember the rules, no sticking playdough up your nose" or "if you don't go to school, I'll have to call the police and they'll come take you to school."  You know what I'm talking about.  Well, yesterday I got to do something I never thought I would do.....I made a leotard and tutu for Kennedy's very small stuffed animal - a kitten to be exact.

Kennedy has been begging for a sewing day with me.  Finally we wrote it on the calendar and she reminded me everyday last week that Saturday would be sewing day.  I really wanted her to get a feel for sewing by hand, so she first did some "paper sewing" which is how I started as a kid.  She made this lovely lizard that she traced from a stuffed animal.

I was thinking that was pretty good for sewing and we'd call it a day, but Kennedy had bigger and better plans (she always does).  She wanted to make a costume for her kitten....a leotard and pink tutu to be exact.   The only problem with this type of project was that Kennedy really couldn't do much of it....so she sat next to me and  gave me tips and doubted my handiwork.   I have to say, it turned out pretty cute AND I never thought I'd sew a very small costume for a cat.  Just looking at the silly cat gets me giggling.   Kennedy was delighted with the finished product and we spent some real quality time together.  I call that success (and I'm also hoping this somehow makes up for all of my other mommy flaws).
