Matthew's First Talk

Ever since Matthew has seen the kids in Primary get up and talk in the microphone, he has been BEGGING to give a talk or say the prayer!! Every time a kid would get up to speak, he'd say, "How come I don't get to talk in the microphone." So, last Sunday, when the secretary handed him the paper saying he would be speaking, Matt was elated!! I told him that he would finally get a chance to talk in the microphone. Matt grinned and then hugged me. It was too funny.

So, we prepared his talk, and practiced it. Then I started getting nervous.....not that he wouldn't give it, but that he would say or do something he shouldn't. Kennedy is a bit more reserved and did NOT want to say her first talk. So this WANTING to get up there is a whole new deal for me.

After sacrament meeting.....which Matthew spent pretty much the whole hour out in the foyer in a time-out, I took him down to the Primary room and handed him his talk and the picture that went with it. He went and sat up front and put the talk in his lap and sat quietly. I was actually pretty impressed at how reverently he sat there.

Then, it was his turn to speak...he practically ran to the microphone, climbed up the steps and pulled the microphone as close to his mouth as he could without actually eating it. He is so short that I don't think you could see much of his head over the podium. Anyway, I told him what to say and he spoke very clearly into the microphone. Then he started getting very comfortable with the microphone and talked REALLY LOUD into it. So, I told him that he didn't need to talk so loud, so then he started whispering his talk. I told him to to just talk normal. He did great!! After he said, "amen", he turned to the Primary President and said, "I forgot to say I love my mom and dad." It was cute.

Watching Matthew sit up there so reverently and then helping him give his first talk was one of those rewarding "mom moments" that I will always cherish. And it was just that, a moment. Because then he and another one of my Sunbeams were taking off there socks and shoes during Sharing Time and NOT being reverent at all!! Ahhh...such is life with a 3-year-old.

How cute. It is too bad the proud mommy momments don't come more often, but then again maybe it is good that they don't so we can appreciate them all the more when they do happen.
