Like Coming Home

I have received a new church calling......I am no longer Mattie's Sunbeam teacher. I am the Valiant 10 teacher of 9 boys. When the Primary President told me about this calling, she warned me that this class needed some serious help. She warned me about two boys in particular. Then, my friend, who is also in the Presidency, warned me that this class can be so awful that subs come out of there crying! When I told another lady in the ward what my new calling was, she told me to tell them to get a man in there and that the boys in that class were way too rowdy for a woman to be teaching it.

Well, you can imagine that I was a bit nervous about the whole thing. I kept thinking, "How bad can they be?" The first Sunday I walked in there and they thought I was "another" sub. The two boys who were deemed "trouble" weren't there. Well, we laid down some rules and they were fine and I actually had fun teaching them. The last two Sundays, even with all nine of them there, I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed myself. After teaching fifth graders for a few years, it felt like coming home and I was reminded why I love teaching and love that age so much. You can actually have a real conversation with them and feel like you are making a difference AND they appreciate your sense of humor.

I will admit, I miss my sweet little Sunbeams and am happy that they still smile and wave at me in the hall, but my new calling is far less physically exhausting and Matthew is actually doing better without me. I know the boys in that class will push me as I become less of a novelty, but so far, so good.

they must have truly been inspired to get you in there. I am certain you will do wonderfully with them. Hopefully you have had enough good weeks that they will continue to respect you as their teacher.
I was only with my 11 and 12 year olds for a short time but I also loved them immediately. I was quite sad to leave them. Good luck, though I'm sure you don't need it. love you, Cherish

I can agree with you that sunbeams are physically exausting. (spelling??) I would have been so scared to walk into that class for the first time after people saying those things to me. You're brave :)
