Kennedy riding with no training wheels!Even though Layne has been out of town for the past 4 days, things have been good here. I took Kennedy to her kindergarten-round-up on Wednesday. I have to admit, I was a little nervous. I know that kindergarten is NOT that big of a deal, but I kept imagining the teachers taking one look at Kennedy and saying, "Oh, you didn't put her in preschool, did you? Yep, it shows, she's going to flunk kindergarten." Instead, they sent the kids off to do a craft while they talked to the parents. The first teacher gave us an idea of what the kids will be learning and then told us things that would be helpful for our kids to know. It basically went like this:
1) Students should be able to write their first name with the first letter capitalized and the rest of the letters lower-case. Hooray! Kennedy can do that...I had even read an article about teaching them NOT to use all caps, otherwise, I would have messed that up.
2) Students should be able to hold their pencil correctly - check.
3) Students should be able to use scissors - Kennedy is the Queen of Cutting as she LOVES crafts.
4) Students should be familiar with their alphabet - Yippee! Kennedy can recognize most of the letters of the alphabet, but I have ALL summer to help her with those that she doesn't know.
5) Parents should read to their children daily - that's easy...I love to read to the kids and so it's part of our naptime/bedtime routine. Kennedy LOVES a good story!
Then they gave us a list of social things your child should be able to do.......share, carry on a conversation, etc. I went home feeling like I had passed some test or something....I know, totally lame. I should have listened (and believed) my friend Marianne, who told me that NONE of her kids went to preschool and they were just fine.
ANYWAY...after the Kindergarten Orientation, Kennedy and I ran to pick up my mom's CRICUT machine from Robert's. Then the kids and I hand delivered it (it was a gift she actually purchased for herself for mother's day!) to her house. We spent Wednesday and Thursday night there and once the kiddos were settled into bed, we took ample opportunity to play with her new toy. (I may need one of my own someday...it was pretty amazing.) The kids had a great time and I'm pretty sure my parents enjoyed seeing their adorable grandkids. Hyrum was finally warming up to them when we had to head home on Friday morning so we wouldn't miss Kennedy's dance class.
Layne will be home tomorrow and I am sooo ready to see him. However, I think I'm getting better at this single mom thing and I don't get so stressed out when he's gone....maybe I was just lucky this time, who knows.

My kiddos didn't do preschool either... they've done just fine!
Good luck with the kindergarten stuff. I am amazed what they expect from them now. I remember going to kindergarten and playing house and learning my colors. Austin is just finishing kindergarten and can read. I just hope that I can still help him with his homework when he gets up to 5th and 6th grade, or else I might have to go back to grade school myself. What fun.
Hyrum's smile is adorable in that first picture with his awesome cowboy boots. Kennedy looks super cute in her new dress. That one was a good choice. I love the picture of Kennedy at the bottom too. She looks so grown up, and she is just beautiful. We sure miss you guys.
